James (ジェイムズ, Jeimuzu) is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreich's Sternritter with the designation S: The Superstar to manifest his hero and fellow Sternritter, Mask De Masculine;[2] the latter with whom he could empower with his cheering.[1]

Appearance

James is short, chubby, and bald. He wears a polo shirt and overalls. He also wears sunglasses, bowler shoes, and holds a hammer which he uses to ring a bell to start the Mask De Masculine matches.

Personality

James seems to have an immense amount of respect for Mask and enjoys cheering him on during his battles, as well as becoming immensely upset when Mask appeared to lose to Kensei Muguruma.[3] He also has a habit of referring to Mask as "mister" (ミスター, Misutā).[4]

Plot

The Thousand-Year Blood War arc

James is present as Mask ambushes Shūhei Hisagi, Ikkaku Madarame, and Yumichika Ayasegawa and rings his bell to signal the start of the fight.[5] After Mask is overpowered by the three Shinigami, James cries out to him, activating Mask's Schrift and giving him the strength to defeat his opponents.[6] Shortly afterwards, two burning lights burst through the clouds and descend into the city several miles away, causing Mask and James to wonder what it is.[7]

At James' recommendation, Mask attempts to rush to the landing zone to figure out what's going on and potentially find more foes to defeat. Before they can leave, they are stopped by Captains Kensei Muguruma and Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi and James spectates and is disheartened when Mask initially loses. However, James once again uses The Superstar to revitalize Mask, allowing him to overpower Kensei.[8] James is shortly afterwards bifurcated by Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi in order to prevent his cheers from further empowering Mask.[9] After revealing he can still cheer even while bifurcated, James is quickly cut to pieces by the newly-arrived Renji Abarai.[10]

However, James reveals he possesses amazing regeneration abilities by growing a new copy of himself from each piece of himself as he continues empowering Mask with his cheers.[11] After Mask fires his Star Flash: Super Nova at Renji, James is caught in the blast, incinerating him while crying in disbelief as Mask tells him not to worry as he will be reborn as long as Mask still lives.[12] However, with Mask's death at the hands of Renji soon afterwards, James is also dead.[13] With his death, James' soul was absorbed by Yhwach.[14]

Equipment

Bell: James carries a small bell around with him, which he rings as a way to show his support to Mask whenever the latter fights.[15]

Powers & Abilities

Great Spiritual Power: As one of the Sternritter, James' spiritual power is on a level comparable to that of a captain-level Shinigami.[16]

Reishi Manipulation: As a Quincy, James primarily absorbs spiritual energy from the atmosphere, and combines it with his own spiritual energy to form weapons.[17] He has an easier time collecting this energy in environments with higher concentrations of Reishi such as in Soul Society or Hueco Mundo.[18]

Schrift

The Superstar (英雄 (ザ・スーパースター), Za Sūpāsutā; Japanese for "Hero"): James' Schrift, which allows him to manifest his ideal hero in the form of his fellow Superstar Mask De Masculine.[2] He could also further empower Mask by cheering him on, allowing the latter to become physically stronger and even healing his injuries.[19][1]

James creates several duplicates of himself after being cut to pieces.

James creates several duplicates of himself after being cut to pieces.

  • Body Division: If the original body is incapacitated in battle, The Superstar will allow James to form small nude copies of himself from the severed portions to rapidly increase the potency of his praise for Mask, allowing the latter to enter an empowered form in the process.[21]

Weaknesses

The Superstar

Mutual death: If both James and Mask are simultaneously dead, they cannot revive each other and will both permanently die.[13][14]
